A Happy New Year to everyone!
How was your New Year? I spent my holidays visiting a temple, resting a lot, enjoying some New Year sales, and even watching the Kabuki performance.
Recent years In Japan, there is a trend of reflecting on the year with a single kanji character in each December. This year of Kanji was 熊(bear), which became social issues until threatening local residents.

My Kanji in 2025 was 話(dialogue). Through many conversations, I grew emotionally and was encourage to learn a new language- sign language. Those encounters shaped who I am today.
Every year Tsukiji Hongwanji Temple also announces a kanji for the coming year. The kanji for 2026 is 遠(far).

It is about distance, and also connections reaching back into the distant past- reminding us that our present is shaped by unseen causes and relationships.
Kanji can feel a bit like a QR code; beyond pronunciation and meaning, there are deeper layers of information and stories waiting to be explored. This historical letters may also contain someone’s memories, and can include tips for how we live our lives.
